‘Send help’: LA GOP leader issues desperate appeal after Dem mayor’s campaign vid shocks viewers

A campaign video is supposed to sell you on the candidate. This one sold everybody on the system instead. Karen Bass's team put out a clip touting a 6-to-1 public matching funds arrangement, and instead of landing as a feel-good "look how accessible our democracy is" moment, it landed as a public demonstration of how the math gets rigged before a single vote is counted. Roxanne Hoge didn't have to spin much. She just had to point at the screen.

That's the part that should bother people regardless of party. When a dollar raised by a favored campaign turns into six dollars of public backing, you're not funding elections, you're manufacturing outcomes with taxpayer money and calling it reform. LA voters didn't sit down one day and demand their city government subsidize incumbents at a 6-to-1 clip. Somebody wrote that ratio into law, presumably the people it benefits most, and then packaged it as a campaign selling point rather than something to bury in a policy footnote.

Hoge calling it "shenanigans" is blunt, but the video did the work for her. You don't usually get the quiet part said out loud in a glossy campaign ad. Whether "send help" gets Republicans anywhere in a county this blue is a separate question, and probably not a hopeful one this cycle. But the video is out there now, and it's a pretty clean illustration of how one-party cities build rules that make the next election easier than the last one, all under the banner of small-donor democracy.

What happens next matters more than the clip itself. If nobody in LA government is bothered enough to revisit that ratio, that tells you the quiet part wasn't a slip. It was the plan.
