Trump cancels nearly $1B in funding for illegal immigrants and

The last time a president used a "pocket" rescission, Richard Nixon was in office. So let's give President Trump some credit for dusting off a forgotten tool and actually using it to claw back $810 million Congress had already blown. This wasn't a line-item gimmick. It was a direct swipe at the swamp's favorite habit: appropriating money for pet projects and never expecting anybody to ask for it back.

The targets are what make this worth arguing about. The canceled funds were set aside for illegal immigrants and race-focused programs. In other words, money that Democratic leadership wanted to spend on people who broke the law to get here and on dividing Americans by skin color. Cutting both at once is a clear statement. The era of open wallets for identity politics is over.

To be fair, a rescission this size won't balance the budget. $810 million is real, but it's a rounding error in Washington's sea of red ink. What matters more is the precedent. If presidents can actually reclaim unspent funds, maybe Congress thinks twice before loading up a bill with nonsense. Accountability has a way of concentrating minds.

We'll see if Senate Republicans hold the line or cave to the usual theatrics. But this move shows Trump is serious about draining the swamp, even if he has to use a shovel nobody else remembered existed.
