Trump posts AI image of himself seizing Iranian-flagged tanker — as tension escalates in Strait of Hormuz

An AI-generated image of the president standing over a seized tanker is not exactly diplomacy. It's meme warfare, and Trump has always understood that a picture travels faster than a policy paper. Whether it's a smart move in the Strait of Hormuz is a different question entirely, and it's worth separating the two.

The Strait matters because roughly a fifth of the world's oil moves through it. Iran knows this, which is why every administration since Carter has tiptoed around threats there rather than posting cartoons about them. Declaring it "US territory," even rhetorically, is the kind of line that sounds tough on a phone screen and sounds reckless in a briefing room. Words in that stretch of water have a way of turning into incidents fast, and incidents there don't stay contained to a headline cycle.

None of that means Iran should be handled with kid gloves. Tehran has spent decades harassing shipping, arming proxies, and testing how far it can push before someone pushes back. A president willing to signal real resolve, instead of the mealy-mouthed statements Iran has learned to shrug off, is not the problem. The problem is when the signal is an AI image instead of an actual strategy, because Iran's regime doesn't scare easily and it definitely doesn't scare at memes.

There's a difference between projecting strength and improvising with graphics software. If the administration wants to deter Iran in the Strait, it needs a plan the Navy can execute, not a post that goes viral for an afternoon. Trump's instinct that America should stop being pushed around in that waterway isn't wrong. The instinct isn't the strategy, though, and eventually somebody has to show the second part..
