Trump targets Biden-era billion-dollar Smithsonian budgets amid anti-'woke' push

A billion dollars a year to run a museum system, and the fight isn't over the money, it's over what's on the walls. That tells you something about where the Smithsonian ended up. This is an institution that used to be a source of national pride, the place you took your kids to see the flag from Fort McHenry or the actual Apollo capsule, and somewhere along the way it started treating American history like a crime scene to be narrated with maximum guilt. Trump pulling the budget under a billion for the first time since 2020 isn't some random accounting move. It's a message.

The 162-page report behind this is going to get dismissed as culture-war theater, and sure, some of it probably is. But go look at what actually triggered the complaints: exhibits reframing the founding as basically a con job, curators more interested in grievance narratives than artifacts, entire wings that read like a lecture rather than a museum. Taxpayers fund this place. They're allowed to ask whether their money is buying education or activism dressed up as history.

Nobody serious is saying don't fund the Smithsonian at all. Air and Space, Natural History, the American History Museum, these are genuine treasures and they deserve real support. But funding isn't a blank check, and an institution that leans hard into one political framing of the country it's supposed to represent shouldn't be surprised when the people footing the bill start asking harder questions.

If the Smithsonian wants its budget back, the fix is pretty simple: tell the whole story, not just the parts that make good copy for a press release about systemic something-or-other. A museum that can't trust visitors with the full picture doesn't deserve a blank check. That's not censorship. That's just expecting the national museum of a proud country to act like one.
