UMass Dartmouth football murder suspect overstayed tourist visa,

The paperwork will say Chukwunonso Eze was in the United States legally for nine years. He wasn’t. He came on a tourist visa in 2015 and simply never left. Instead of being sent home, he received deferred action under both President Biden and President Trump. Now he is accused of murdering a UMass Dartmouth football player. That is not a legal gray area. That is a system that keeps forgiving people who shouldn’t be here, until one of those people does something unforgivable.

Deferred action is supposed to be a temporary mercy, not a permanent reward for ignoring the law. When both administrations treat it as a routine outcome for someone who overstayed a visa, they are telling every other overstayer that nothing will happen. You can wait it out. You can even get a second chance at a second chance. The real tragedy is that this was entirely predictable. The tools to remove Eze existed. The will to use them did not.

The victim was a young athlete with a future. His name is being remembered while the man accused of killing him is being remembered as the latest example of what happens when immigration enforcement becomes optional. Deferred action became a death sentence for someone else. A functioning border policy would have sent Eze home years ago. Instead, we handed him a document and hoped for the best.

We don’t need another commission on this. We need law enforcement to prioritize the people who are here illegally and have already been identified.
