It also tells you something important about where the party’s head is. Nobody was chanting “48” as a protest against Trump. They were chanting it because Trump remade this coalition, and they want a successor who doesn’t apologize for it. Vance didn’t stumble into that moment by accident. The work is still boring: keep prices down, keep the border under control, keep the country out of dumb wars, and find candidates who can talk like normal humans. If Republicans want a clean handoff whenever Trump decides the time is right, the movement has to look like it can govern, not just chant.

Democrats will try to spin this as personality cult stuff, like everything on the right is just vibes and volume. They do that because they don’t have an answer for why their own crowds aren’t chanting for a future they’re proud of. If you heard “48!” in that room, you heard something else too: the base wants continuity, not a retreat. The smart move now is to earn it, with results.
