WATCH: GOP holdout rejects Trump threat as AG nominee standoff explodes

Thom Tillis has never been shy about breaking from the pack, and this is that instinct again, just aimed at a bigger target than usual. The White House wants Todd Blanche confirmed, Trump is leaning on it hard, and Tillis is basically saying the deal was the deal before Trump decided he wanted something else. That's a legitimate position to hold. Senators aren't supposed to fold every time a threat lands in their inbox, and if there really was a prior commitment on how this nomination would be handled, walking it back because the president got impatient isn't exactly a great argument for why Tillis should move.

But let's not pretend this is happening in a vacuum. Tillis has spent the better part of this term positioning himself as the Republican who's willing to tell Trump no, and there's a difference between principled independence and building a brand around friction. Voters can usually tell which one they're watching. If this is genuinely about process and commitments made in good faith, fine, make that case loudly and specifically instead of just digging in.

The bigger problem is what this does to the confirmation itself. An AG nominee twisting in the wind because of a standoff between the president and one senator isn't a great look for anybody involved, least of all the Justice Department that has to function once this is settled. Blanche didn't create this fight. He's just stuck in the middle of it while two stubborn men figure out who blinks first.
