Wesley Bell fends off challenge from DSA-backed Cori Bush

DSA money, DSA volunteers, DSA's entire organizing apparatus built for exactly this moment. She still lost. That should sting more than the usual primary-night spin will admit, because this wasn't some purple district where a socialist label was always going to be a stretch. This was Missouri's 1st, a seat drawn to be safely, comfortably Democratic. If the socialist brand can't win there, where exactly is it supposed to win?

Bell isn't some moderate savior riding into St. Louis on a white horse. He's a Democrat who beat Bush in 2024 too, and now he's done it again against a second wave of DSA cash and enthusiasm. That's the real story here. The socialist wing keeps insisting it's the future of the Democratic Party, the energy, the base, whatever word they want to use this cycle. And twice now, in the same district, actual voters have said no thanks.

We don't say this because we think Wesley Bell is some hero for the right. He isn't. But there's something worth noticing when a party's most online, most ideologically committed faction keeps losing to the guy who just wants to legislate without the theater. Democrats nationally are still trying to figure out whether they're a party of working people or a party of activist Twitter. Missouri's 1st just cast another vote for the former, and it's not the first time.
