Washington has a talent for turning anything new into a turf war, and AI is the latest shiny object. The story’s big tell is that line, “We simply cannot allow further delays, it’s time for action.” Sure. But action for whom, and aimed at what? If Democrats take back Congress, the first fight won’t be about protecting families from deepfakes or stopping scams. It’ll be about who gets to sit at the head of the table and write the rules.

We’ve seen this movie. A new “oversight” structure pops up, it grows teeth, and somehow the people with the least feel for markets and national security end up micromanaging both. Democrats don’t just want guardrails, they want the steering wheel. The country doesn’t need a permanent committee for “action.” It needs results that people can see, and rules that don’t change every time the gavel changes hands.
