After 'Lake America,' Trump suggests a new name for the state of New Mexico

Renaming New Mexico "America" because Trump doesn't like the word "New" in front of it is exactly the kind of bit that plays great for about six hours online and then just sits there. It's a joke. It's an obvious one, riffing off "Lake America" the way a guy riffs off his last joke at the dinner table because the first one landed. Fine. The problem isn't that Trump posted it. Presidents have always had a jokester streak, and this White House built its entire brand on trolling people who take themselves too seriously.

The problem is the repost. When the official White House account amplifies a meme crossing out a 400-year-old state name, it stops being a Truth Social bit and starts being an institutional statement, even a half-joking one. New Mexico has been called that since before Manifest Destiny was a phrase anyone used. It's got its own culture, its own Spanish colonial history that predates most of the rest of the country's English-speaking population by a century. Erasing that, even as a gag, hands critics a free layup: "see, they don't respect us, they don't know history, they think it's all just America now." That's not a hill worth giving away for a laugh.

None of this means New Mexicans should be pretending their state seal is under siege. Nobody is renaming anything. There's no executive order, no bill, no actual policy consequence here, just a president who likes bothering people on the internet. The outrage cycle that treats every Truth Social post like a legislative act is exhausting and it's part of why nobody trusts anybody's reaction to anything anymore.

Still, if you're the White House, you get to decide what's worth your official seal of approval. A renaming joke about a state most Americans couldn't find on a map isn't advancing anything. It's just noise that lets the other side change the subject from actual policy wins to "look what he said about New Mexico." Pick your battles. This wasn't one worth fighting, even in jest.
