Atlanta detective accused of swiping 12-pack of beer from Publix

Ronald Sluss had one job. Enforce the law. Instead, the Atlanta detective allegedly helped himself to a $19 12-pack of beer at a Canton Publix and tried to walk out without paying. Now he’s been arrested and relieved of duty. All for a few dollars’ worth of suds.

The details are almost too easy to laugh at. A grown man with a detective’s salary, a badge, and a pension, allegedly swiping cheap beer from a grocery store that has cameras on every aisle. Throwing away a career, a reputation, and his freedom over something you can buy with pocket change. That’s not a mistake. That’s a choice. Police officers know better. They’re held to a higher standard because they carry authority that the rest of us don’t.

To their credit, the Canton PD and Atlanta Police didn’t dawdle. He was arrested, and the department yanked him from the field. That’s exactly what should happen. The badge doesn’t excuse the theft. We expect the law to apply to everyone, including those who wear the uniform. This story isn’t an indictment of policing. It’s proof that accountability still works, even for one detective who made a fool of himself over beer.

Maybe this will be a career-ending blunder. It should be. There are too many honest officers putting their lives on the line to let one guy with sticky fingers drag them down. Sluss can enjoy his cold ones somewhere else, because he’s got no one to blame but himself.
