CNN says it was bumped from the Air Force One pool for President Trump’s trip to Knoxville, and the outrage is almost too easy to mock. The network has spent years treating Trump as an illegitimate liar, then expects a prime seat on his plane like it’s a season ticket. That’s not how access works. The White House press pool rotates, and the president’s team decides who rides along. Maybe CNN got squeezed by scheduling. Maybe not. Either way, a network that proudly wears its hostility shouldn’t be shocked when it doesn’t get a warm seat.

What’s actually happening here is simpler than the cable news drama suggests. CNN wants the rewards of the establishment press without any of the obligations. It wants to be treated as a neutral institution while acting like an opposition firm. That was never really true, but the old rules at least pretended it was. Trump doesn’t play that game. He treats the media as what he sees them as: partisans with cameras. Access is a privilege, not a right, and the people who act most entitled to it are usually the ones doing the most to forfeit it.

The press corps is happy to defend that privilege when it benefits them. But they never mention how cozy they got with the previous administration’s media operation. CNN isn’t crying about the principle of a free press. It’s crying about losing its place in line. We’re not losing sleep over their seating chart. If they want back on the plane, there’s an easy fix: cover the president like a story, not a disease. Don’t hold your breath.
