CNN, MS NOW and Politico announce First Amendment suit after

There’s a familiar rhythm to this. CNN, MSNBC and Politico get told they can’t sit in the White House briefing room, and suddenly the First Amendment is being wheeled out like a legal crowbar. The lawsuit they filed this week is long on outrage and short on actual law. The First Amendment protects the press from government censorship. It does not hand any news outlet a key to the West Wing.

The White House press area is not a public park. It’s the president’s house, and the president gets to decide who is in his briefing room. No one has a right to that seat. Treating a denial of access as a constitutional violation is like a guest demanding a return invitation after being asked to leave. Access is a privilege, not a public right. These outlets can still report from every corner of Washington. They can still ask questions in other forums. They are not being silenced. They are being treated like adults who have to face consequences for bad behavior.

Some will call this petty. Maybe it is. But the president doesn’t owe hostile media outlets a platform in his own home. If CNN, MSNBC and Politico spent half as much energy doing honest reporting as they do filing lawsuits, they might understand why the door is closed. The First Amendment doesn't guarantee a front-row seat to anyone. And nobody is buying the victim act this week.
